Henley-on-Todd: A Waterless Regatta

Henley-on-Todd boats in Alice Springs

Imagine a regatta… with no water. No paddles. And boats powered by feet rather than sails.
Yep – this quirky spectacle is real. It’s the Rotary Henley-on-Todd Regatta, and it takes place every August in the dry, sandy bed of the Todd River in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia.

It’s as mad as it sounds – and a whole lot of fun.

Racing Boats… Without Water?

Held on the third Saturday in August, Henley-on-Todd is the world’s original dry riverbed regatta, and it’s been running since 1962 (with only a few dusty breaks over the decades). Locals and visitors flock from across Australia – and even the world – for this hilarious desert boat race.

The twist? The Todd River is completely dry most of the year. So instead of floating boats, you’ll see teams hoisting bottomless vessels and running Flintstones-style across the riverbed.

It’s all about the fun – not the finesse. Think silly costumes, sand flying everywhere, and a whole lot of giggling from the crowd.

A Day Full of Mayhem and Merriment

I went to the 60th anniversary event just this past Saturday 20 August with my daughter, and honestly, it was one of those small-town, big-spirit events I’d be chuffed to unwrap again.

The festivities kicked off at 10.30am with a street parade down Todd Mall. Boats on wheels, pirate hats, viking helmets, and more colour than a pack of Skittles. My daughter bopped along happily to the band, and I couldn’t stop grinning watching her take it all in.

By midday, the races began – and the riverbed became a whirlwind of sand and silliness. There are events for every age group, from kids to grown-ups.

Budgie Smugglers, Hamster Wheels, and Other Wild Races

One of my favourite things? The homemade boats. Some participants build theirs in advance, while others whip one up with Rotary’s help at the Todd Mall markets the weekend before.

There’s something joyfully chaotic about it all – races include budgie smuggler dashes, hamster wheel runs, and yacht sprints (on sand, of course).

The MCs are awesome – hyping up the crowd, stirring up cheers, and keeping the laughs flowing all day long. You can jump into the races or just chill on the sandbanks, cheering till your voice goes raspy.

I actually took part in one of the races back in 2015 – in a six-person bottomless boat, no less! Picture me with my short legs pumping like mad, desperately trying to keep up with the rest of the crew. We were tearing across the sand, trying to outrun the boat next to us, and I swear I was giggling the entire time – and long after too. Total highlight. One of those “Did I really just do that?” kind of memories.

The Grand Finale: Battle of the Boats

The day ends with pure Aussie madness – the infamous ‘Battle of the Boats’.

Picture this: three trucks dressed up as Viking ships, pirate galleons, and Navy cruisers. Add on enthusiastic crews shooting water cannons, lobbing flour bombs, and launching smoke grenades. It’s noisy, ridiculous, and absolutely unmissable.

Kaydes was mesmerised – eyes wide, smile even wider. And I? I was soaking up the sheer delight of a town coming together to do something so utterly bonkers, yet so joyful.

Why You Should Go (At Least Once!)

There’s something beautifully local about Henley-on-Todd. It’s silly, spirited, and bursting with community energy. It doesn’t take itself too seriously – and that’s exactly the point.

It’s family-friendly, affordable, and just the right kind of weird to leave you with unforgettable memories. Plus, where else can you say you watched a regatta with not a drop of water in sight?
