“Every heart sings is a project that talks about nature, family, evolution, care and wonder. They float into our lives to make us smile and think.” – Patricia Piccinini
Alice Springs is no stranger to the unusual, but nothing was quite like seeing the Skywhales’. These larger-than-life sculptures were visiting on their tour around Australia, and I went along to see them with my parents and daughter.
Hesitantly, an early start of 4.45am had been required this morning. While chasing the yawns away, we drove to Blatherskite Park with all the stars still out. We parked up, got the pram out and found our way to the viewing area.
In front of us, were these big mutant-like whales trying to move and get up.

They’re hot air balloon sculptures, named Skywhale and Skywhalepapa, that form a family. Designed by Australian artist Patricia Piccinini, they certainly leave an impression. Skywhale was attempting to fill up with hot air, with big hanging breasts blowing about. While newer Skywhalepapa has big hands holding onto babies.
Due to the wind conditions, only Skywhalepapa and his babies got up to see the sunrise. Skywhale slept in instead.
But it was lovely to see him being kissed by the morning light, as the locals got up and danced to a specially made song ‘We Are The Skywhales‘ by composer Jess Green aka Pheno.
Thank you to Patricia Piccinini and the National Gallery of Australia for taking the Skywhales on a national tour, and bringing them to Alice Springs. Kaydes loved seeing the hot air balloon animals. She would’ve loved to crawl out to them if she was allowed 😂
