Taking my daughter, Kaydes, and our cat, Theodore, for walks in the sand dunes near Waikanae Beach, where we stay in a cosy family bach, has become one of our favourite activities. There’s something magical about letting both my energetic toddler and our cautious indoor cat explore the outdoors together. These walks give us a chance to unwind, reconnect, and take in nature in a way that feels incredibly special. For my tips on introducing beach walks to cats, see the post here.
The private track we take is just across the street, starting under the cool shade of pine trees and gradually opening up into the sand dunes. It’s an ideal spot for our little adventures – quiet, sheltered, and away from any busy areas or barking dogs. If you’re thinking about combining toddler energy with feline curiosity for a beach walk, here’s a glimpse of what makes it all work for us.
A Different Kind of Beach Visit
Most beach days with kids are filled with sandcastles, splashing in the waves, and ice creams. But with Theodore in tow, our outings are more like slow, intentional explorations. Kaydes charges ahead with excitement, while Theodore, ever the cautious indoor cat, takes his time sniffing the salty air and carefully inspecting (and eating) the plant life around him. It’s a balancing act – keeping pace with Kaydes while encouraging Theodore to feel safe enough to explore the outdoors.
We often set out early in the morning, while the world is still asleep and the air feels crisp. Birds begin their chorus as the track wakes up, sheltered by the tree grove that offers a sense of calm and protection. In these quiet moments, both Kaydes and Theodore felt free to explore at their own pace. It’s here that I truly appreciate the joy of slowing down. It’s not about reaching a destination; it’s about being fully present and savouring the journey.

Keeping Everyone Safe
When it comes to these walks, safety is always at the top of my mind, especially with a toddler and a cat in tow. Waikanae’s sand dunes offer the perfect retreat. Spacious, quiet, and far from the bustling areas of the beach where dogs might be running freely. We stick to the dunes above the beach, where I can keep a close eye on both of them.
Theodore is always on a long, comfortable lead that gives him the freedom to wander a little without straying too far. He loves to explore, but as an indoor cat, his confidence only goes so far. The lead offers him a sense of security, knowing he can venture out but still be close to me. Kaydes’ eyes lighting up with each new hidden treasure she finds along the path.
Being prepared is key. While our walks usually last between 30 to 60 minutes, I always bring a few essentials. For Kaydes, it’s mostly about layers of warm clothing, just in case the wind picks up or the weather changes unexpectedly. For Theodore, I make sure his harness is secure, and on occasion, I’ll bring his carrier if we’re venturing out later in the day and/or I need a safe spot for him.
Toddler-Cat Dynamics
One of the most heartwarming parts of these walks is watching Kaydes and Theodore interact. Theodore is incredibly patient with her, tolerating her gentle pats and the occasional curious poke.
When Theodore pauses to take in the surroundings – ears twitching at a distant sound or his nose twitching at a new scent – Kaydes instinctively slows down too. Sometimes she’ll crouch down beside him, chattering away about the ‘family’ and putting leaves on his head! Theodore, ever the tolerant cat, accepts the gesture with calmness.
It’s in these moments that I feel like they’re teaching each other. Theodore’s slow, deliberate movements show Kaydes to pause and observe the world around her. In return, her joy and curiosity seem to encourage him to explore a bit more each time.

The Magic of Waikanae Beach
For us, Waikanae Beach isn’t just any beach – it’s a place where we’ve created countless memories. The spacious dunes offer a unique blend of adventure and serenity. There’s room for both speed and slowness, excitement and calm.
For any other parents wondering if it’s worth taking a cat along on a beach walk, I’d say absolutely. While it’s a little unconventional, there’s a kind of rhythm that happens when you let both your child and your cat explore at their own pace. It’s not just about the beach walk itself; it’s about creating memories that are unique to us. Every time we go, I feel like we’re adding another chapter to our little family story.
Creating Lasting Memories
Taking both a toddler and an indoor cat on beach walks isn’t without its challenges, but the rewards far outweigh them. There’s something incredibly special about watching Kaydes discover the world around her. All while Theodore, in his quiet way, finds his own comfort in this new environment. It reminds me of the beauty of slow living – of taking time to notice the little things, whether it’s the pattern of the sand underfoot or the way the sunlight filters through the trees.
These walks have become part of our routine when we stay at Waikanae Beach, but they never feel routine. Each time we go out, there’s something new to discover, whether it’s for Kaydes, Theodore, or myself. And it’s in these simple, everyday moments that I realise how lucky we are to share these experiences together. We’re next heading up again in November and we can’t wait!
