Stay: DD Ubud Jungle Villa, Bali 🇮🇩

There is honestly so much to love about Ubud!

Set in the mountainous centre of the island of Bali, Ubud is known for its heart, soul, and healing prowess. The town’s name is derived from the Balinese word ubad, which means medicine.

In fact Eat Pray Love, the famous book-turned-movie, was partially based in Ubud. Elizabeth Gilbert visited a Balinese medicine man and the nearby Tegalalang Rice Terraces, which made them very popular.

Ubud has a such welcoming yet laid back vibe, amazing food, busy markets, old temples, artisan shops, and it’s all set in absolutely lush greenery.

So when browsing accommodation around Ubud, I came upon these villas. I fell in love with the look of the property, casual atmosphere, gorgeous scenery, and great price – always a plus! 🙌🏻

Location

DD Ubud Jungle Villa is located 10km north of Ubud, and 2km east of those rice terraces. Down a road that is treelined, has rice paddy fields, a flowing river, and a bit of uphill climbing. The property is semi-secluded, near the top of a hill, off the beaten track. When I got there (via driver), I jumped up and down in delight, at the gorgeous views and infinity pool.

Built around 2012, the reception is at the top, and the villas descend down the hill on the other side, so there is a bit of stair climbing depending where your villa is. But you can expect this of most accommodation in the area.

My villa named Sabit, was lovely and actually near the top entrance, so I got off lightly!

You stepped onto the balcony that contained a table and chairs for outdoor dining. Then you turn left into the bedroom that contained a dreamy canopy bed. Simply decorated, the villas are handmade from wood by local artisans. I thought it was charming, as it just lets the views be the hero.

The villa had an outdoor and partially covered bathroom, which was a new experience for me! The bath and toilet were all covered, so privacy nor weather were an issue. It just took me a minute, to get used to all the spaciousness, and uncovered shower.

Facilities

My villa was also right near the pool, so I took advantage of my closeness and jumped in there often. It constantly beckons for a refreshing dip, surrounded by vibrant greenery. It’s a slice of paradise where relaxation takes centerstage.

The villas are located in amongst nature, so encountering insects could be a possibility. If coming across a few crickets, geckos or mosquitos isn’t your thing, maybe don’t stay in Ubud, or at least come prepared.

I fell asleep peacefully each night to the sound of the nearby river and the sound of the insects. Albeit with the canopy curtains loosely surrounding my bed to keep out said mosquitos.

The hospitality of the staff is top notch, they always said hello when I was popping in or out, and delivered food with warmth. They also arranged my transport to and from the town of Ubud, and to the Tegalalang Rice Terraces when requested (for a fee). You can arrange scooter hire from them if you prefer.

Nearby Attractions

The main reason I booked this place was due to its closeness to the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. However if not staying nearby, they are definitely worth a trip out to them via drive or tour.

They offer a stunning display of tiered paddies carved into the landscape. The terraces showcase the island’s agricultural heritage, and are best enjoyed at sunrise to avoid crowds, and appreciate the rural charm. Balinese traditions are highlighted through the intricate irrigation system called Subak, creating a harmonious blend of nature and culture.

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a short drive away, immerses you in a mystical realm where cheeky macaques roam ancient temples and lush foliage. Explore Ubud’s bustling markets, a vibrant kaleidoscope of colors and local crafts, offering a taste of Balinese culture.

Keen walkers like me can go walk the Campuhan Ridge Walk (above), offering panoramic views of the lush landscapes. The nearby Tirta Empul Temple, known for its sacred spring water, provides a spiritual journey into Balinese rituals.
