Soakin’ up views at Onsen Hot Pools, Queenstown

Jono at Onsen Hot Pools, Queenstown

Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand‘s South Island, Queenstown beckons to both thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts. Amidst the adventures and exploration, the perfect way to unwind emerges – enveloped by mountains, soaking in the rejuvenating embrace of a hot pool.

If you’re wondering about a quintessential ‘splash out’ activity in Queenstown, look no further than Onsen Hot Pools. I wholeheartedly recommend surrendering to pure bliss in this alpine haven!

Letting off a little steam

The Onsen Hot Pools complex is located in Arthurs Point, just a short drive from central Queenstown. It’s on a hill, nestled by mountains and superior views of the Shotover River that flows past. Sometimes you can even see the Shotover Jet shoot by!

Onsen Hot Pools updates their menu of experiences and options quite regularly, but at the time of our booking, they were offering the Original Onsen Experience or the Outdoor Onsen Experience.

I had Jono and I booked for an Original Onsen Experience for December 8, our wedding anniversary. Unfortunately the terrible weather at the time had other ideas for us, but the company was all too kind to reschedule us to the 11th.

Original Onsen Experience

Their Onsen pools are a kiwi twist on the Japanese bathing tradition. All the hot tubs are made from gorgeous cedar wood, and can be used individually or up to 4 people. The pool water is captured from the surrounding mountains naturally to fill them, and is refreshed daily. The water is heated to approximately 38.5 degrees.

It’s requested that you arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time. You can pass that time by relaxing in the reception area and taking in the views.

At your booked in time, you are shown to your pool area by an attendant, who also goes over a few things. Our room had our complimentary drinks and snacks that we had selected, beside the tub too.

Then you have 60 minutes to relax and soak your worries away. To be honest, it felt a little surreal to actually be in the room, that I had envisioned for so long!

Our Experience

I found the water quite warm, so occasionally, I sat up on the wood flooring next to the tub, with my legs dangling in. I loved having my refreshing cider to cool me down a bit too!

There are buttons beside the pool too, and Jono in particular enjoyed testing them out.

I found that 60 minutes was a perfect amount in the actual pool, as I did find it warm, and would’ve probably not lasted too much longer! It was also enough time for me to enjoy getting snaps, and just to enjoy the moment without all that. The attendant knocks when there’s 10 minutes left.

Before or after your soak, you can spend time on the outdoor sundeck, to extend your time with such a gorgeous vista.

What to Bring

You’ll want to bring your swimsuit, towel, and any other personal items you may need. You can leave your belongings in the car or in the locker rooms at the entrance to the hot pools. There are also changing rooms and showers available if you need them.

Extra Information

Located at 162 Arthurs Point Rd, Onsen Hot Pools is open everyday from 9am to 11pm. They are heavily booked out most days, so definitely take this cue to book ahead now!

I can’t wait to go back again!
