The Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico is a treasure trove of historical wonders, stunning beaches, and vibrant cultural experiences. When I visited this beautiful region, I discovered a magical blend of ancient ruins, turquoise waters, and vibrant local life. As I was travelling solo, I used the bus service ADO and its app, which was wonderful! Here are 8 of the best sights in the Yucatán that captured my heart, and should definitely make your list.
1. Tulum Ruins
Perched on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Tulum Ruins are a spectacular sight. Unlike other Mayan cities, Tulum was a thriving port city, and its strategic location made it a crucial trading hub. The site’s stunning backdrop makes it one of the most picturesque ruins in Mexico.
One of the most fun aspects of visiting the Tulum Ruins is the iguanas basking around in the sun. These fascinating creatures are everywhere, lounging on the ruins and blending in with the ancient stones. If you look carefully in the top image, you can see one on the rock – great views over the ocean!
2. Chichén Itzá
Chichén Itzá, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is perhaps the most famous of all Mayan ruins. The towering pyramid of El Castillo dominates the site and is a testament to the architectural prowess of the Mayans. As you wander through the ancient city, you’ll find the Temple of the Warriors, the Great Ball Court, and the Sacred Cenote, each offering a glimpse into the rich history and rituals of the Mayan civilisation.
3. Tulum
The town of Tulum is a laid-back destination known for its bohemian vibe, eco-friendly resorts, and vibrant nightlife. Beyond the famous ruins, Tulum offers beautiful beaches, cenotes, and a thriving culinary scene. Explore the trendy beach clubs, yoga retreats, and boutique shops along the beach road, or venture into the town for a taste of local life.
4. Akumal
Akumal, meaning “Place of the Turtles” in Mayan, is a haven for snorkelling enthusiasts. The calm, clear waters are perfect for spotting sea turtles, colourful fish, and vibrant coral reefs. Akumal’s shallow bay is ideal for both beginners and experienced snorkelers.
One of my favourite memories from visiting the Yucatán was snorkelling in Akumal. I booked to go with a guide when I got off the bus there, and he was wonderful. I remember the excitement of him pointing out a sea turtle, gracefully gliding through the water. Then he pointed out more, and I was so pleased that I read about coming here! Swimming with these gentle creatures is always a surreal experience that I never forget.
5. Mérida
Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán state, is a vibrant city rich in history and culture. Its colonial architecture, bustling markets, and lively plazas offer a delightful mix of old and new. Visit the impressive Cathedral of San Ildefonso, stroll along Paseo de Montejo, and immerse yourself in the local culture at the bustling Lucas de Gálvez market.
I absolutely loved the look of the architecture here, especially the building above, and it was one of the main reasons I jumped on the bus there. 😍
6. Cancún & Zona Hotelera
Cancun is synonymous with beautiful beaches, luxurious resorts, and vibrant nightlife. The Zona Hotelera, or Hotel Zone, is a strip of beachfront hotels, restaurants, and clubs that cater to tourists from around the world. Whether you want to relax on the pristine beaches, indulge in water sports, or dance the night away, Cancun offers something for everyone. Don’t forget to explore the nearby Isla Mujeres, a small island known for its laid-back vibe and stunning underwater sculptures.
7. Cenote Santa Cruz
Cenote Santa Cruz is a hidden gem in the heart of the Yucatán. This natural sinkhole offers a unique and refreshing swimming experience in crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush greenery. Cenotes were sacred to the Mayans and were often used for rituals and ceremonies. Today, they are popular spots for swimming, snorkelling, and diving.
8. Isla Holbox
Isla Holbox is a tranquil island paradise off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Known for its pristine beaches, shallow lagoons, and abundant wildlife, Holbox is a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful escape.
