“If Paris is a city of lights, Sydney is the city of fireworks” – Baz Luhrmann
This quote perfectly captures the magic of Sydney. The city dazzles with its iconic sights, especially when you’re standing in Circular Quay, with the Harbour Bridge to your left and the Opera House to your right. It’s one of those pinch-me moments that Sydney delivers effortlessly.
Whether you’re here for a short trip or have more time to explore, these eight must-see Sydney sights will give you a true taste of what the city has to offer.
1. Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is as iconic as sights get. I remember my first visit, where I was amazed by the intricate tiling on the iconic shells – details often missed in photos. The steps leading up to the Opera House are perfect for capturing great photos too. Kaydes and I had fun bounding up and down them, and getting snaps of us.
Seeing it in person, especially during Vivid Sydney when it’s bathed in vibrant lights, is an unforgettable experience. While I haven’t taken a guided tour or seen a performance there yet, just being inside to use the bathroom felt like a small victory. The Opera House is a must-see, no question about it.
2. Sydney Harbour Bridge

Another obvious sight is the Harbour Bridge. But to elevate your experience, walk all over it – do the Bridgeclimb!
Expensive ✅
Ugly mandatory jumpsuit ✅
.. but wonderful memories from it ✅
The climb is both thrilling and educational, with fascinating insights into the bridge’s history. Even though parts of the climb, like the catwalk, can be nerve-wracking, the experience becomes more enjoyable as you ascend. Highly recommended, despite the cost. Would you do it?
3. Milsons Point

Milsons Point is my favourite spot to watch the sunrise over Sydney. It offers a sublime view of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and the city skyline. I’ve often stayed in The Rocks neighbourhood especially for its close proximity to Circular Quay and the Harbour Bridge. The latter of which I love to walk along at dawn, and soak in the quietness of the harbour from a good height.
If you time it right and the weather obliges, you can reach Milsons Point just as the sun begins to rise. This magical moment casts a warm glow on the bridge pylons, creating a gorgeous scene that’s perfect to photograph. The area is vibrant with early-morning activity. You’ll see people strolling along the waterfront, ferries zipping by, and even the local ‘bin chickens’ (a cheeky term for ibis) roaming around.
4. Mrs Macquarie’s Chair
Mrs Macquarie’s Chair is another breathtaking viewpoint that offers a stunning perspective of Sydney’s iconic sights. Situated on a promontory in the Royal Botanic Garden, it provides an exceptional vantage point to admire the Opera House and Harbour Bridge against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour. I also loved the trees that provided a natural photo frame, and the gentle sea waves lapping on the shore.
On a recent trip, getting here with a pram was a bit of a challenge, but the view was more than worth it. Early morning is the ideal time to visit. The soft, golden light of sunrise casts a warm glow over the Opera House, enhancing the beauty of your photos and providing a peaceful start to the day.
5. Bondi to Coogee walk
The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is an absolute must for any visitor to Sydney. This 6km trail can be tackled in either direction—starting from Bondi Beach and finishing at Coogee, or vice versa. The walk takes you along stunning cliffs that provide breathtaking panoramas of the Pacific Ocean.
Allow 2-3 hours to complete the walk, but don’t rush it. There are plenty of spots to stop and take in the views or snap some photos. Along the way, you’ll find charming cafes and kiosks where you can refresh yourself, grab a coffee, or enjoy a bite to eat.
6. Darling Harbour & Chinese Garden of Friendship

Darling Harbour wasn’t always my favourite area, but it’s grown on me, especially after seeing how much Kaydes loved the fountains in Tumbalong Park. The park’s playground is a hit with kids, and the Chinese Garden of Friendship next door offers a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle.
It’s wonderful place to pass time, zone out and re-centre yourself on a seat, while listening to the wind in the trees, watching the lanterns sway, and the koi fish dance in the water.
7. Taronga Zoo
Taronga Zoo is one of my favourite zoos worldwide! The sights of Sydney harbour and city alone are worth the visit, and the animals are a bonus! The zoo is renowned for its well-designed exhibits and diverse range of animals, including iconic Australian species like kangaroos, koalas, and wombats, as well as exotic animals like giraffes, lions, and elephants.
Quite an intrepid uphill zoo, my family and I in the past have caught the Sky Safari Cable Car up, (from near the ferry terminal), and then leisurely wandered down. This scenic ride provides spectacular views and makes the uphill journey much easier. Once you’re there, you can leisurely wander down through the zoo’s various exhibits and enjoy the animal encounters.
8. Queen Victoria Building & CBD Shopping

The Queen Victoria Building (QVB) is a stunning piece of Romanesque Revival architecture, with its stained glass, dome, and intricate metalwork. The clock inside is a marvel, with a ship sailing around to count the seconds and bells chiming every half hour. The building is particularly lovely at Christmas time, when they go all out with decorations and lights.
QVB also features 3 above ground floors, and 2 basement levels, with underground connections to the Town Hall train station, and to department stores Westfield, and David Jones – great kids floor on level 9!
Sydney is a city that truly has it all – breathtaking sights, rich history, and vibrant culture. Whether you’re exploring famous landmarks or hidden gems, these 8 sights will make your visit unforgettable.
